Kiran: A Fine Indian Tradition

TTL Restaurant Society

One of Houston’s finest hidden treasures and one of my favorite Indian traditions.

Eight years ago my husband and I were introduced to Indian cuisine at a small restaurant in West Houston called Ashiana. Dining there regularly on Chef Kiran’s classically prepared Indian dishes, we fell in love with the food. Many years later we moved to a different part of town, but would still make the trip often driving 20 or more miles to get our fix! In 2004 we learned that Chef Kiran had taken over the space previously known as Bombay Palace, just west of Highland Village shopping center, to open Kiran. It is there that we drive now and where the Chef reminds us why we still love and crave lamb Vindaloo.

From the white tablecloths, lighting and decor, meticulously crafted wine selection, wait staff and of course the FOOD, Kiran is special.

At Ashiana I enjoyed traditional Indian comfort food, but at Kiran I can not only indulge in her delicious brand of curries and homemade naan bread served hot (love!), but also try delicate seafood dishes. Chef Kiran is greatly influenced by the Mughlai style of northern India.  At Kiran you can find beautiful Biryani and array of traditional Tandoori –style entrees prepared to perfection (you can even add a ginger poached egg!).  Do try some of her nontraditional Indian dishes that have an addictive combination of spices and herbs. One of my favorites is the Tandoori Sea Bass with mango chutney.

If you’re new to Kiran, or even Indian food, try the tasting menu or high tea . Just recently I enjoyed the prix fixe lunch with friends. That memorable meal started with a beautiful flight of lentil, Indian-spiced fire roasted tomato and tomato with saffron soups and ended with Chef Kiran’s take on a bananas foster.

When I crave Indian, I have to go to Kiran not only for the food, but for the ambiance and personal history. Thank you Chef Kirin for creating one of Houston’s finest hidden treasures and one of my favorite Indian traditions.
