Halo-Halo (Filipino Fruit Sundae)

Description

Halo-Halo (”mix-mix”) is a Filipino fruit sundae made from shaved ice and tropical fruit. It’s the perfect way to beat the heat!

Servings

4

Ingredients

3 cups shaved ice
1 cup diced mango
1 cup diced pineapple
1 cup diced jackfruit, with juice
1 cup macapuno (coconut) strings
1 cup preserved purple yam (optional)
1 12-oz can of evaporated milk
Vanilla ice cream as garnish

Preparation

Place 3/4 cup shaved ice in 4 sundae or milk shake glasses.
Add 1/4 cup each of mango, pineapple, jackfruit, macapuno strings and purple yam.
Pour 1/2 cup evaporated milk and some of the jackfruit juice into each glass.
Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Enjoy!

Notes

You can find most of these ingredients, along with an ice shaver, at an Asian grocer. You can also add or substitute your favorite kinds of fruit, but the macapuno strings and mango make it quintessentially Filipino. I'm not a huge fan of purple yam, and think papaya makes a great alternative.

  3. Fun! It’s a twist on the sno-cone, which I LOVE.

  4. It’s yummy and kids love it too! I remember using a little bit of condensed milk instead of evaporated sometimes – I can only imagine the sugar high I was on afterwards!

  5. This looks unbelievably delicious!!! Thanks for sharing :)
